Formation of the County and Its Name
Georgia created Schley County in 1857 from portions of Marion and Sumter counties. The county was named for William Schley, a former governor of Georgia; the name is locally pronounced “Sly.”
Early residents were largely small cotton farmers who had moved into southwest Georgia from the coast, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Court days, churches, schools, and nearby market towns shaped community life during the nineteenth century.
