Open the Baker County Florida map and Macclenny is the first place to find. Glen St. Mary sits close by, while Sanderson and Olustee stretch west through a much quieter landscape of timberland and wetlands. The county had an estimated 29,737 residents in 2025, up 5.2 percent from the 2020 census count.

Outside Macclenny, the towns become smaller and the spaces between them grow wider. Interstate 10 and U.S. 90 carry most of the east–west movement, but Osceola National Forest takes up much of the western setting. It is a county where roads, small communities, and forest land make more sense when viewed together.

From Jacksonville’s Edge to the Georgia Line

Baker County lies just west of the Jacksonville area and directly below the Georgia line. Charlton and Ware counties are across the state boundary, while Nassau and Duval are on the Florida side to the east. Macclenny feels connected to the larger metro area, but that connection fades quickly as the map moves west toward Sanderson and Olustee.

Along the north, the St. Marys River basin adds low, wet ground to the pine country. The Osceola Research Natural Area includes pine-hardwood swamp, cypress, longleaf pine, and other flatwoods habitats. That is why the western side may look sparse in town names even though it covers a large and varied stretch of land.

A Growing County That Still Feels Rural

Baker County has grown since 2020, but it has not turned into one continuous suburban area. Macclenny has the county offices and most of the everyday services, with Glen St. Mary close enough to feel like part of the same eastern cluster. Farther west, Sanderson and Olustee sit apart from one another along U.S. 90.

Those gaps between town names are part of the story, not empty space. The drive from Macclenny toward Olustee passes through long stretches of timberland and rural property. How Macclenny Became the County Seat

Baker County was formed from part of New River County in 1861 and named for Judge James McNair Baker. Sanderson was the first county seat, but courthouse fires and a later election changed that. The government moved to a community then called Darbyville, which soon became Macclenny.

Macclenny took its name from Carr B. Macclenny, a lumberman tied to the town’s sawmill period. Early county life depended heavily on pine timber, naval stores, farming, and the railroad. The old industries have changed, but the wide spacing of the communities still reflects a county built around forests and transportation routes.

Why Olustee Stands Out on the Map

Olustee is small, but its name carries unusual weight in Florida history. More than 10,000 troops fought nearby on February 20, 1864, in what Florida State Parks identifies as the state’s largest Civil War battle. The battlefield later became Florida’s first state historic site, and its monument was dedicated in 1912.

The park is near Sanderson, right beside the broad pine landscape of Osceola National Forest. That setting matters because the battle unfolded along the railroad route west of Jacksonville, not near one of Florida’s larger cities. On a history map, Olustee becomes easier to place when the railroad corridor and the forest around it are shown together.

Start the Color Map in the East

On the color map, begin with Macclenny and Glen St. Mary in the east. Then follow the county west to Sanderson and Olustee, where the towns spread farther apart and the forest takes over more of the view. Different fills make Nassau, Duval, Clay, Union, and Columbia counties easy to separate from Baker County. At the top edge, the map also makes the Georgia line immediately clear.
