From Rocky Ford to Sylvania
Georgia created Screven County in 1793 from portions of Burke and Effingham counties. The county was named for General James Screven, a Revolutionary War officer who had commanded forces in Savannah.
Rocky Ford was the first county seat, followed by Jacksonborough in 1797. The seat moved to Sylvania in 1847, creating the civic center that remains in use today.
Revolutionary History and River-Country Landmarks
The Battle of Brier Creek took place in the county in 1779 and remains one of its most important Revolutionary War sites. George Washington also traveled through the area during his 1791 tour of the southern states.
Other local features include Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area, Robbins Grist Mill, the artesian wells at Rocky Ford, and large agricultural properties. Sylvania’s livestock festival and community events reflect the continuing influence of farming on county life.
