County Formation in 1824
Georgia created Upson County from parts of Crawford and Pike counties in 1824. The county was named for Stephen Upson, a respected Georgia attorney and political figure.
Thomaston was planned as the new county seat and named for War of 1812 general Jett Thomas.
Railroads and Textile Manufacturing
Thomaston grew as cotton and textile production expanded. Rail service supported the movement of raw cotton, finished fabric, timber, and other goods to larger markets.
Large textile mills shaped twentieth-century employment and urban growth. After the industry contracted, manufacturing, medical services, education, public-sector work, and retail became more important.
Flint River and Sprewell Bluff
The Flint River is the county’s major natural feature. Sprewell Bluff Park provides access to rocky river scenery, forested slopes, rapids, trails, picnic areas, kayaking, and fishing.
The river and its tributaries also provide wildlife habitat, agricultural water, and scenic value across western Upson County.
Yatesville and the Rural Landscape
Yatesville developed as a small railroad and farming town. The surrounding northeastern district remains a landscape of farms, woodland, rural roads, and small communities linked to Thomaston and neighboring counties.
