Georgia’s Ninetieth County

Georgia created Walker County from part of Murray County in 1833. It became the state’s ninetieth county and was named for Freeman Walker, a Georgia lawyer and United States senator.

The county seat eventually moved to LaFayette. The city name honors the Marquis de Lafayette, the French officer who supported the American Revolution.

Chickamauga and Civil War History

The Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863 was one of the major engagements of the Civil War’s western theater. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park preserves battlefields, roads, monuments, and interpretive sites.

The park extends across Walker County and nearby areas and remains one of the county’s most important historic-tourism resources.

Lookout Mountain, Pigeon Mountain, and Rock Town

Lookout Mountain forms a high plateau extending across Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. Its narrow summit supports roads, homes, and small communities overlooking the surrounding valleys.

Rock Town on Pigeon Mountain is a sandstone formation of towers, passages, and boulders. Lula Lake and other protected lands preserve mountain forests, streams, waterfalls, and wildlife habitat.
