Georgia’s 144th County
Georgia created Toombs County in 1905 from parts of Emanuel, Montgomery, and Tattnall counties. It became the state’s 144th county and was named for Robert Toombs, a former U.S. congressman and senator who later served the Confederacy.
Lyons had been incorporated in 1897 and was selected as the county seat. Railroads brought timber and naval-stores workers into the area, and towns developed along the new transportation lines.
Vidalia Onions and Agricultural Identity
Vidalia onions were first cultivated locally by Mose Coleman during the 1930s. Their mild, sweet flavor turned the crop into one of Georgia’s best-known agricultural products.
Vidalia promotes itself as the “Sweet Onion Capital of the World,” and the annual Vidalia Onion Festival attracts visitors to the county. Livestock, corn, cotton, timber, packing, and food distribution also contribute to the agricultural economy.
Railroads, Wartime Growth, and Regional Services
Vidalia began as a railroad station and grew into a trade center. During World War II, a U.S. Army Air Force field brought personnel, supporting businesses, and wartime industry to the area.
The county now contains educational facilities, health services, museums, and historic buildings. Southeastern Technical College operates multiple facilities within Toombs County.
