A county reshaped by later boundaries
Pulaski County originally covered a larger area. Dodge County took part of its territory in 1870, and Bleckley County was formed from northwestern Pulaski in 1912.
The present county covers about 247 square miles. The 2020 census counted 9,855 residents, compared with the 2025 estimate of 10,172.

Hawkinsville and nineteenth-century river trade
Hawkinsville lies on the Ocmulgee River and was incorporated in 1830. It was named for Benjamin Hawkins, a federal agent who worked closely with the Muscogee Nation.
Steamboats, poleboats, and timber rafts carried cotton, corn, lumber, passengers, and other freight down the Ocmulgee to the Altamaha River and the coastal ports. Hawkinsville became one of Georgia’s important inland wholesale and river-transport centers.
From river port to highway hub
Railroads competed with river traffic during the 1850s, but Hawkinsville remained a transportation center. Multiple state and federal highways now cross the city, supporting its “Hub City” and “Georgia’s Highway Hub” nicknames.
Road access helps local farms and industries reach ports and larger markets. Commercial and public services remain concentrated around Hawkinsville’s central routes.
Georgia’s harness-racing training center
Hawkinsville became a winter training destination for trotters and pacers during the 1920s. Its mild climate and soft clay track attracted horsemen from colder parts of the United States.
The Lawrence L. Bennett Harness Horse Training Facility opened in 1977 and is the state’s only dedicated harness-training facility. Winter training and the annual Harness Festival form a distinctive part of county tourism and culture.
Old Opera House and downtown preservation
The Hawkinsville Old Opera House opened in 1908 as city hall and an auditorium. Its 576-seat room and large stage hosted plays, films, worship services, ceremonies, and public meetings.
After restoration, the building became the home of the Hawkinsville–Pulaski County Arts Council. It adds a performing-arts function to a downtown otherwise shaped by river, road, and county-government history.
