Toombs County Georgia map|Lyons, Vidalia, and Sweet Onion Country

The Toombs County Georgia map covers a southeast Georgia county centered on Lyons and Vidalia. Santa Claus is the third incorporated city, while several unincorporated communities are spread across a landscape of farms, pine woods, and transportation routes.

The 2020 U.S. Census counted 27,030 residents, and Census Bureau estimates show 1.9 percent growth from the April 2020 estimates base to July 2025. Agriculture, food processing, logistics, education, and regional commerce support the economy.

Lyons, Vidalia, and Santa Claus

Lyons is the county seat and contains the courthouse and county offices. Vidalia is the larger regional trade center, known nationally for its sweet onion industry, while Santa Claus is a small incorporated city southeast of the two main centers.

Santa Claus was incorporated in 1941. A local farmer selected the unusual name in hopes of attracting travelers to stop and purchase pecans.

Georgia’s 144th County

Georgia created Toombs County in 1905 from parts of Emanuel, Montgomery, and Tattnall counties. It became the state’s 144th county and was named for Robert Toombs, a former U.S. congressman and senator who later served the Confederacy.

Lyons had been incorporated in 1897 and was selected as the county seat. Railroads brought timber and naval-stores workers into the area, and towns developed along the new transportation lines.

Vidalia Onions and Agricultural Identity

Vidalia onions were first cultivated locally by Mose Coleman during the 1930s. Their mild, sweet flavor turned the crop into one of Georgia’s best-known agricultural products.

Vidalia promotes itself as the “Sweet Onion Capital of the World,” and the annual Vidalia Onion Festival attracts visitors to the county. Livestock, corn, cotton, timber, packing, and food distribution also contribute to the agricultural economy.

Railroads, Wartime Growth, and Regional Services

Vidalia began as a railroad station and grew into a trade center. During World War II, a U.S. Army Air Force field brought personnel, supporting businesses, and wartime industry to the area.

The county now contains educational facilities, health services, museums, and historic buildings. Southeastern Technical College operates multiple facilities within Toombs County.
