Georgia’s Thirty-Fifth County

Georgia created Telfair County from part of Wilkinson County in 1807. It became the state’s thirty-fifth county and was named for Edward Telfair, a Revolutionary-era political leader who served two terms as governor.

Jacksonville was the first county seat. As railroads and population shifted, government activity moved toward the communities that later became McRae and Helena.

Railroads, Timber, and Agricultural Trade

Rail connections helped McRae, Helena, Milan, and Lumber City move timber and farm products to regional markets. Sawmills, turpentine operations, cotton gins, and warehouses shaped the early commercial economy.

Peanuts, cotton, corn, livestock, and pine forestry remain important land uses. Public services and light manufacturing now complement the county’s traditional farm and forest economy.

Rivers and Outdoor Landscapes

The Ocmulgee River and Little Ocmulgee River form major geographic references. Horse Creek Wildlife Management Area protects river-bottom forests and wetlands used for fishing, boating, wildlife observation, and hunting.
