The Monroe County Georgia map covers a growing central Georgia county positioned between metropolitan Atlanta and Macon. Forsyth is the county seat, while Culloden, Juliette, Bolingbroke, and High Falls represent historic, residential, and recreation communities across the county. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 32,023 residents on July 1, 2025.
That figure was 14.5 percent above the April 2020 estimates base. Interstate 75, access to Macon, rural land, historic towns, and outdoor destinations all contribute to Monroe County’s mix of commuter growth and local identity.

Growth along the Atlanta–Macon corridor
Monroe County had 27,957 residents in the 2020 census and an estimated 32,023 in 2025. Housing growth has been especially visible near Forsyth, Bolingbroke, and Interstate 75, where residents can reach Macon and travel north toward the Atlanta region.
The county still retains broad areas of forest, farmland, rivers, and small communities. This produces a settlement pattern in which new subdivisions and long-established rural properties exist close to one another.

Forsyth, the courthouse, and an early railroad
Forsyth became the county seat in 1823 and was named for Georgia statesman John Forsyth. The current courthouse, completed in 1896, remains in use and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
The Monroe Railroad was chartered in 1833 to connect Forsyth with Macon and became one of Georgia’s earliest railroads. A later Central of Georgia depot has been restored and now serves as the county historical museum.
Juliette and a film-created visitor economy
Juliette is an unincorporated community in eastern Monroe County. Its best-known modern identity comes from the 1991 film Fried Green Tomatoes, which used local buildings and roads as the fictional town of Whistle Stop.
The Whistle Stop Cafe and nearby shops continue to attract visitors. The community combines film tourism with river scenery, railroad history, and a small-town landscape distinct from central Forsyth.
High Falls and the Towaliga River
High Falls State Park protects rapids, cascades, lake waters, and the remains of a former industrial town along the Towaliga River. Fishing, paddling, camping, and hiking make the area one of Monroe County’s main outdoor destinations.
A Civil War skirmish took place at a Towaliga River bridge in November 1864. The river corridor therefore combines recreation, industrial remnants, and wartime history.
