Growth along Highway 316 and the Athens edge
Oconee County grew from an April 2020 estimates base of 41,783 to 44,893 in 2025, a 7.4 percent increase. Georgia State Route 316 brought retail centers, medical offices, schools, subdivisions, higher traffic, and rising property values to the county’s northern corridor.
Many residents commute to Athens and the University of Georgia. The county’s 184.3 square miles therefore combine suburban development near major roads with farms, cattle land, forest, and small towns.

Watkinsville and the creation of Oconee County
Watkinsville appeared in local records by 1791 and was formally laid out in 1802. It served as the Clarke County seat until 1872, when that role moved to the larger university town of Athens.
Western residents then supported the creation of Oconee County, and Watkinsville became its seat in 1875. The present courthouse was built in 1939 as a Works Progress Administration project and expanded in 1998.
Eagle Tavern and the stagecoach era
Eagle Tavern opened around 1801 and served travelers moving between Madison, Greensboro, and Athens. The site may have earlier held Fort Edward, a frontier stronghold associated with Watkinsville’s early settlement period.
The restored building now operates as a museum and visitor center. It interprets wagon roads, stage travel, lodging, and local stories from the nineteenth century.
Elder Mill Covered Bridge and rural heritage
Elder Mill Covered Bridge was built in 1897 and moved to its present site south of Watkinsville during the 1920s. It is one of Georgia’s few surviving wooden covered bridges and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
The bridge stands in a landscape of streams, woodland, and farms that contrasts with the developed Highway 316 corridor. It is a useful reference point for understanding the county’s older rural road network.
