Pasaquan and a nationally recognized art environment
Artist Eddie Owens Martin, who adopted the name St. EOM, returned to his family property near Buena Vista in the 1950s and transformed it into Pasaquan. Buildings, walls, sculptures, and painted surfaces combine imagery influenced by Africa, Asia, South America, and ancient cultures.
Columbus State University has managed the site since 2016. Pasaquan is not arranged like a conventional gallery; the property itself is the artwork, making it one of Marion County’s most distinctive visitor destinations.

How Buena Vista became the county seat
Marion County was created in 1827 from Lee and Muscogee counties and named for Revolutionary War general Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion. Horry served as the first seat, followed by Tazewell in 1838.
The seat moved to Pea Ridge in 1849. Residents renamed the town Buena Vista to honor Zachary Taylor’s victory in the Mexican War. The present courthouse was built of local brick in 1850, with a columned entrance added in 1928.
Agriculture, the Federal Road, and limited market access
Early settlers arrived through the 1827 land lottery and developed cotton farms on productive soil. The county lacked direct river and railroad access during its strongest antebellum growth, so farmers moved goods west to Columbus.
A route opened through the region in 1805 later became part of the old Federal Road, an early vehicle corridor toward Mobile, Alabama. The Buena Vista and Ellaville Railroad was completed in 1884, but agriculture remained the dominant economic base for decades.
Josh Gibson’s Buena Vista roots
Josh Gibson was born in Buena Vista in 1911 and attended school there before his family moved to Pittsburgh during the 1920s. He became one of the most celebrated power hitters in Negro League history and was widely known as the “Black Babe Ruth.”
Although his professional career developed in northern cities, his birthplace remains part of Buena Vista’s local heritage. His story also reflects the migration of rural southern families seeking industrial employment during the early twentieth century.
