Ware County Georgia map|Waycross and the Okefenokee Swamp

The Ware County Georgia map covers a large southeast Georgia county centered on Waycross and the northern Okefenokee Swamp. Deenwood, Waresboro, Manor, and other rural communities are distributed across pine forest, wetlands, and transportation corridors.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 36,906 residents in 2025. Rail transportation, forestry, wood products, health care, education, tourism, and regional services support the economy.

Waycross and the Rural Communities

Waycross is the county seat and contains county government, hospitals, colleges, shopping, rail facilities, and the largest concentration of residents. Deenwood lies near the city, while Waresboro and Manor represent smaller rural districts.

Much of southern and eastern Ware County remains sparsely populated because wetlands, forests, and protected natural areas occupy large sections of the landscape.

County Formation and Nicholas Ware

Georgia created Ware County when Appling County was divided on December 15, 1824. The county was named for Nicholas Ware, a Georgia politician who served in the state legislature and the United States Senate.

Waresboro served as the early county seat, but government moved to Waycross as the railroad junction became the dominant commercial center.

Waycross as a Railroad Junction

Waycross grew where major rail lines crossed. Passenger service, freight yards, maintenance facilities, warehouses, and related businesses made the city a regional transportation center.

Rail and highway access remain important to logistics and manufacturing, while Waycross also provides medical, educational, retail, and government services to surrounding counties.

Okefenokee Swamp and Nature Tourism

The Okefenokee Swamp covers roughly 700 square miles and extends across much of Ware and Charlton counties, with smaller portions in neighboring areas. Cypress forest, islands, open wetlands, and dark-water channels support alligators, migratory birds, and many other species.

Okefenokee Swamp Park near Waycross offers boat tours and wildlife viewing. Laura S. Walker State Park provides camping, fishing, hiking, golf, and lake recreation.

Forestry and Cypress Logging

Pine forestry and wood processing have long shaped Ware County. During the early twentieth century, a narrow-gauge railroad ran from Hebardville to Billys Island in the Okefenokee to transport cut cypress timber to mills.
