Cotton Wealth and Agricultural Change
Georgia formed Talbot County from Muscogee County in 1827. During the antebellum period, cotton, peaches, and livestock made the county one of Georgia’s prosperous agricultural areas, supported by the labor of a large enslaved population.
The boll weevil sharply reduced cotton production in the early twentieth century. Farm numbers later declined, average farm size increased, and livestock became a larger share of agricultural sales.
Fishing, Hunting, and Pine Mountain Foothills
Big Lazer Creek Wildlife Management Area contains a 196-acre public fishing lake, a boat ramp, picnic facilities, and primitive camping. Talbot County is also known among hunters for deer and wild turkey.
Magic Hill near the foot of Pine Mountain is a roadside optical illusion where a vehicle appears to roll uphill. Historic Talbotton, the annual fall festival, and nearby outdoor attractions add to the county’s visitor appeal.
