Pelham and the Hand Trading Company
Pelham was incorporated in 1881 and named for Confederate artillery officer John Pelham. Its location at U.S. Highway 19 and State Route 93 helped the town serve farms in the southern county.
The Hand Trading Company became one of southwest Georgia’s largest early twentieth-century retail businesses. Its four-story downtown building offered a wide range of goods and turned Pelham into a major shopping destination for rural families.
The Camilla Massacre and Reconstruction politics
On September 19, 1868, Black voters and Republican supporters marching to a political rally in Camilla were attacked by armed white residents. The violence became known as the Camilla Massacre and is one of the most important examples of political terror during Georgia’s Reconstruction period.
The confrontation followed the removal of newly elected Black legislators from the Georgia General Assembly. Public commemoration developed much later, as local and state history programs began acknowledging the victims and the event’s significance.
Peanuts, pecans, poultry, and processing
Agricultural output includes cotton, peanuts, pecans, sweet corn, soybeans, poultry, cattle, vegetables, and pine timber. Camilla supports businesses that process or distribute many of these products, connecting farm production to regional markets.
The county’s official name has two competing explanations. Historical sources connect it either to Revolutionary War general Henry Mitchell or to David B. Mitchell, who served twice as governor of Georgia.

The 2020 census counted 21,755 residents, while the 2025 estimate was 20,467, a 6.0 percent decrease from the April 2020 estimates base. Mitchell County covers about 512 square miles east of the Flint River.
It borders Dougherty, Worth, Colquitt, Thomas, Grady, Decatur, and Baker counties. Camilla lies near the center, Pelham to the south, Baconton to the north, and Sale City toward the east.
