Bainbridge and the Lower Flint River
Bainbridge is about forty miles north of Tallahassee and sits where U.S. Routes 27 and 84 meet. Its location on the Flint River supported trade and river transportation, and the city has been described as one of Georgia’s inland ports. County government offices and many local services are concentrated there.
The Flint enters the county from the north, passes Bainbridge, and continues toward Lake Seminole. At the reservoir, the Flint and Chattahoochee river systems meet near the Georgia–Florida line before water continues south as the Apalachicola River. This water geography distinguishes Decatur County from inland counties farther north.
A county formed in 1823
Georgia created Decatur County on December 8, 1823, from part of Early County. It was named for U.S. naval officer Stephen Decatur. The original county covered a much larger area, but later county formations reduced it to its present southwest Georgia boundaries.
The 2020 Census counted 29,367 residents, and the Census Bureau reported 597.24 square miles of land. Population is spread between Bainbridge, smaller incorporated cities, and rural areas. The county’s four incorporated cities are Attapulgus, Bainbridge, Brinson, and Climax.
Communities across the county
Bainbridge occupies the central river corridor. Brinson lies to the west, while Attapulgus and Climax are east of the county seat. Climax received its name from its position at the highest point on the historic railroad line between Savannah and the Chattahoochee River.
The county borders Miller, Baker, and Mitchell counties across the northern side, Grady County to the east, and Seminole County to the west. Gadsden County, Florida, lies beyond the southern state line. These neighbors connect Decatur County to both Georgia’s agricultural southwest and the Tallahassee area.
