Railroads and the County’s Small Towns
Rochelle began after the Savannah, Americus, and Montgomery Railroad reached the center of the county in 1887. The settlement was first called Center and took the name Rochelle when it incorporated in 1888.
Pineview grew along a northern rail line and incorporated in 1902. Pitts became the main rail center in western Wilcox County and incorporated in 1905. Their histories show how rail service once directed settlement and trade.
Agriculture, Timber, and Watermelons
Early settlers combined subsistence farming, hunting, and cattle raising before producing cotton and fruit for outside markets. Agriculture and timber remained important as railroads carried local products to larger markets.
Watermelons, peanuts, cotton, cattle, and forest products have all been associated with the county economy. Wilcox County has also been recognized as one of Georgia’s leading watermelon-producing counties.
Wild Hog Festival and Local History
Abbeville uses the nickname “Wild Hog Capital of Georgia” and hosts the annual Ocmulgee Wild Hog Festival. The event combines food, music, and community activities in the county seat.
Jefferson Davis camped near Abbeville on May 8, 1865, while fleeing at the end of the Civil War. He was captured two days later near Irwinville, linking Wilcox County to the final days of the Confederacy.

Wilcox County remains lightly populated, with communities separated by farms and forests. Abbeville is on the eastern side, Rochelle is near the center, Pineview is in the north, and Pitts serves the western portion.
