Toccoa as a Rail and Service Center
Toccoa developed around an Atlanta–Charlotte rail stop in the early 1870s. The settlement was first known as Dry Pond before adopting the name Toccoa, traditionally linked to a Cherokee word associated with beauty.
The city now contains county government, retail districts, educational institutions, an Amtrak stop, and regional medical services. Its railroad location and access to waterpower helped establish earlier furniture, thread, steel, and equipment industries.

A County Formed in the Blue Ridge Foothills
Georgia created Stephens County in 1905 from parts of Franklin and Habersham counties. It became the state’s 143rd county and was named for Alexander Hamilton Stephens, a Georgia political figure who served in state and federal office.
The location had already been shaped by Cherokee communities, early river routes, railroads, and tourism tied to the North Georgia mountains. Toccoa became the seat of the new county after years of debate over government access in the surrounding area.
Currahee, Camp Toccoa, and Outdoor Heritage
Currahee Mountain rises about 900 feet above the surrounding land and marks the southern end of the Blue Ridge chain. During World War II, airborne troops training at Camp Toccoa ran the mountain route remembered as “three miles up, three miles down.”
The Currahee Military Museum preserves the camp’s history, while Toccoa Falls, Traveler’s Rest, Lake Hartwell, and Lake Yonah represent the county’s natural and historic visitor sites. The Tugaloo River and nearby lakes also support fishing, boating, and hydroelectric landscapes.
