Andersonville and the national memory of prisoners of war
Andersonville Prison operated in southern Macon County during the Civil War. Designed for 10,000 Union prisoners, it held about 33,000 at its peak, and nearly 13,000 men died from disease, overcrowding, and malnutrition.
Today Andersonville National Historic Site includes the prison grounds, Andersonville National Cemetery, and the National Prisoner of War Museum. Most of the site lies in Macon County, with a smaller portion extending into Sumter County.
