Lowndes County borders Berrien and Cook counties to the north, Lanier County to the northeast, Echols County to the east, and Brooks County to the west. Hamilton and Madison counties in Florida form the southern neighbors, making cross-state travel part of everyday regional geography.

Historic courthouses and changing county seats

Before Valdosta, the county seat moved through Franklinville, Lowndesville, and Troupville. The current historic courthouse was completed in 1905 in the Neoclassical Revival style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Judicial offices moved to a newer complex in 2010, but the courthouse remains one of downtown Valdosta’s main historic landmarks. Its location marks the final stage of the county-seat movement toward the railroad city.
