One of the final battles of the 1836 Creek War occurred at Chickasawhatchee Creek Swamp. The event is part of the larger history of Muscogee removal, militia campaigns, and the expansion of plantation settlement in southwest Georgia.

Baker County borders Calhoun, Dougherty, Early, Miller, and Mitchell counties. Newton depends on regional connections toward Albany, Camilla, Colquitt, and Blakely for many jobs, medical services, shopping, and transportation links.
