White County Georgia map|Cleveland, Helen, and the Blue Ridge Foothills

The White County Georgia map covers a mountain county in northeast Georgia. Cleveland is the county seat, while Helen is a tourism center known for its Bavarian-style downtown and setting along the upper Chattahoochee River.

White County was created from Habersham County in 1857. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 29,802 residents on July 1, 2025, and the county’s 240.74 square miles include foothills, river headwaters, forests, and two incorporated cities.

Cleveland and the County’s Civic Center

Cleveland contains the courthouse and the principal offices of White County government. It is also the main local service center for schools, shopping, and public institutions.

The city sits south of the county’s highest mountain areas and connects the northern recreation communities with Hall County and the broader Gainesville region. Its administrative role differs from Helen’s visitor-focused economy.

How Helen Became a Mountain Destination

Helen developed around a lumber mill on the Chattahoochee River in 1911. A railroad carried timber products from the area, but the mill economy and rail service later declined.

Local business owners began redesigning the downtown in a Bavarian style in 1969. The change turned Helen into one of Georgia’s best-known mountain tourism towns, with lodging, restaurants, shops, river activities, and a major Oktoberfest celebration.

Mountains, Headwaters, and Protected Land

White County lies on the eastern side of the Appalachian mountain chain and includes much of the headwater system of the Chattahoochee River. Yonah Mountain is a major landmark, and the northern county reaches into the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Unicoi State Park, Smithgall Woods Conservation Area, and Appalachian Trail access add hiking, camping, fishing, and nature education to the local economy. Their detailed trails and internal boundaries should not be assumed to appear on a general county map.

Population Growth and Visitor Economy

The 2020 census counted 28,003 residents. The 2025 estimate of 29,802 represented a 6.4 percent increase from the 2020 estimates base. Population density was 116.3 people per square mile in 2020.

Tourism has a larger economic presence here than in many inland rural counties. Census business data recorded substantial accommodation, food service, and retail activity, reflecting Helen, state parks, mountain cabins, wineries, and other visitor destinations.
