Hiawassee and Young Harris
Hiawassee sits on Lake Chatuge and contains county government, marinas, lodging, shops, restaurants, and the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. Young Harris lies west of Hiawassee and is centered on Young Harris College.
The two cities occupy separate mountain valleys but form the county’s main service and visitor centers. Tate City is an unincorporated community in the more remote eastern mountains.

County Formation in the Blue Ridge
Georgia created Towns County from parts of Rabun and Union counties in 1856. It became the state’s 118th county and was named for George W. Towns, who served as governor from 1847 to 1851.
Cherokee communities and trading routes preceded the county. The path through Unicoi Gap later became an important public road across the Georgia Blue Ridge.
Lake Chatuge and the Hiawassee Economy
The Tennessee Valley Authority created Lake Chatuge in 1941. Although thousands of acres were flooded, the reservoir brought new recreation, water, and economic opportunities to Hiawassee and the surrounding mountain area.
Fishing, boating, camping, lakeside lodging, and the Georgia Mountain Fair make the lake one of the county’s most important visitor assets.
Brasstown Bald and Mountain Recreation
Brasstown Bald rises to 4,784 feet and is the highest point in Georgia. The mountain is partly in Towns County and partly in Union County, and its summit offers views across four states on clear days.
Bell Mountain, the Hiwassee and Tallulah river systems, Unicoi Gap, and the Chattahoochee National Forest add hiking, scenic driving, fishing, and wildlife opportunities.
Young Harris College and Mountain Education
Young Harris College began in 1886 as the McTyeire Institute, created to provide education in an isolated mountain region. The surrounding village adopted the name Young Harris in 1895.
