Interstate 20 crosses the southern part of the county and provides the main high-speed connection toward Atlanta and Augusta. Most roads beyond the two towns pass through lightly populated farmland and forest.

County Formation and Early Government
Georgia created Taliaferro County in 1825 from portions of surrounding counties. It was named for Benjamin Taliaferro, a Revolutionary War veteran and early Georgia political figure.
Crawfordville was named for William H. Crawford, a Georgia statesman who served in national office. The town became the administrative and legal center for the county’s dispersed rural population.
Alexander H. Stephens and Liberty Hall
Crawfordville is closely associated with Alexander H. Stephens. His home, Liberty Hall, and surrounding grounds are preserved within A. H. Stephens Historic Park.
The park interprets political history and nineteenth-century life through museum exhibits, historic structures, trails, and outdoor facilities. It is the county’s best-known visitor destination.
Farms, Forests, and Low-Density Settlement
Cotton once dominated local agriculture, but erosion, changing markets, and farm consolidation altered the economy. Woodland, pasture, timber production, and smaller farms now shape much of the landscape.
