The important limitation is that the service name does not guarantee the same geographic detail for every dataset. ABS explicitly warns that datasets within a system can have different geographic variables and levels of detail.

Check geography before you commit to a workflow

You want a quick regional visual comparison
Use Data by region first. It is the service explicitly described as an interactive map for regional and local area data. It is especially useful when you want to locate areas of interest before deciding whether a deeper table or API workflow is necessary.
You want Census information for small areas
Begin with Census products. QuickStats is designed for summary information on people, families and dwellings, with comparisons from very small statistical areas (SA1) through state and national levels. Community profiles provide a broader statistical picture for small areas such as SA2 and include time-series profiles. DataPacks are the option on the comparison page for users who need detailed Census information in a format suitable for loading into their own database or system.
You need a table with selected variables
TableBuilder is the natural fit. It is a self-service online system for creating and downloading detailed aggregate tables. ABS lists it for intermediate users and notes registration and conditions of use. You need a web interface and an API
Data Explorer should be high on the list. It is shown as a website-and-API platform with immediate aggregate output. This can be useful for a workflow that starts with manual exploration and later moves to programmatic retrieval. The important check is topic coverage: the ABS page specifically says not all topics are available in all data services, so the presence of an API does not by itself guarantee the indicator you want.
When the charged services become relevant
The charged services solve a different class of problem from a public regional map. MicrodataDownload provides unit-record data about people, households or businesses for analysis in your own environment, with highly confidentialised items that may be supplied in broader ranges or groupings. DataLab and data integration services provide access to more detailed microdata and can involve R, SAS, Stata and Python in the secure analytical environment.
ABS notes that DataLab output is cleared before it is released and that access can involve safe researcher training, project and data custodian approval, conditions of use and other declarations. Consultancy services are different again: ABS provides customised aggregate data based on the client’s request. These services are relevant when the analytical requirement cannot be met by the free self-service products, not simply because a user wants a more polished version of the same map.
This is also where project timing becomes important. The free services in the comparison are shown with immediate output. Charged services can involve approval, output clearance or a consultation process, so an automated or time-sensitive workflow should account for access and delivery method as well as data coverage.

Limits to keep in mind when using the services for maps
A map can make regional differences easy to see, but it does not remove the need to check geography and aggregation. Aggregate statistics combine records into categories or areas; microdata consists of unit records. Those are different forms of data with different access and confidentiality requirements. If a project begins with an aggregate map and later moves into unit-record analysis, the workflow has changed substantially and should be treated as such.
Geographic labels also need care. The ABS comparison page places ASGS structures and non-ABS structures in the same geography section, but that does not make their boundaries equivalent. A Local Government Area, a Statistical Area and a suburb can overlap in complex ways.
