Decatur and Seminole counties, Georgia, lie to the north; Leon County lies east; Liberty County lies south; and lake-and-river boundaries separate the west from Jackson and Calhoun counties. Midway faces the Tallahassee side of the region, whereas Chattahoochee faces the Florida–Georgia–Alabama tri-state watershed. That contrast gives U.S. 90 and Interstate 10 their strong east–west orientation.

Water supplies the clearest boundary marker west of Chattahoochee. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers describes Lake Seminole as a 37,500-acre reservoir where the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers join. Below Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam, the outflow is named the Apalachicola River.
