Stewart County Georgia map|Lumpkin, Providence Canyon, and the Chattahoochee

The Stewart County Georgia map covers a west-central Georgia county bordered on the west by the Chattahoochee River and Alabama. Lumpkin is the county seat, Richland is the other incorporated city, and historic rural communities extend across a large, lightly populated landscape.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 4,631 residents in 2025, a 12.8 percent decline from the April 2020 estimates base. Agriculture and forestry remain important, while parks, historic districts, and archaeological sites support tourism.

Lumpkin, Richland, and Rural Communities

Lumpkin serves as the county seat and developed as a courthouse, trade, and transportation center. Richland grew into the larger commercial town after railroad service reached the eastern side of the county.

Omaha lies near the Chattahoochee River and Hannahatchee Creek in the northwest, while Louvale is known for its compact row of historic churches. These places are not incorporated cities, but they remain important map references.

Cotton, River Transportation, and County Formation

Georgia created Stewart County from Randolph County in 1830 and named it for Daniel Stewart, a Revolutionary War veteran and an ancestor of President Theodore Roosevelt. Legal settlement followed land lotteries and the breakup of several large west Georgia counties.

During the nineteenth century, the Chattahoochee River carried cotton toward Gulf of Mexico ports. Stewart County became one of Georgia’s prosperous cotton-producing areas before population loss, soil exhaustion, and transportation changes altered the local economy.

Providence Canyon and a Tourism-Based Economy

Providence Canyon State Park protects a series of colorful gullies created when poor farming practices accelerated erosion in the Coastal Plain. The park is widely known as Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon” and has become the county’s best-known visitor destination.

Florence Marina State Park, the Singer-Moye mound complex, and the historic districts of Lumpkin and Richland add river, archaeological, and architectural attractions. Tourism now supplements the county’s traditional farming and forestry economy.
