East Asian and nearby destinations also have large volumes

The Republic of Korea records 59,942 students, placing it fifth. Hong Kong SAR reports 56,539, Malaysia 43,679, Macao SAR 33,088 and Thailand 18,771. UIS reports Hong Kong and Macao as separate statistical destination areas, and this article preserves those reporting units without making a political-status inference.

These counts show the number of China-origin students in each destination, not the share of all international students there. A destination with a high China-origin count can still have a very different total international-student population. Destination shares require an all-origins denominator.

The United Kingdom, Germany, and France are major European destinations
