County Formation and the LaGrange Name

Georgia established Troup County in 1825 after former Creek lands were divided into new counties. It became the state’s sixty-third county and was named for former governor George M. Troup.

LaGrange was incorporated in 1828 near the geographic center of the county. Its name honors the Château de LaGrange, the French estate of the Marquis de Lafayette.

Railroads, Textiles, and LaGrange

LaGrange grew along the Atlanta and West Point rail line and developed as a center of commerce, government, health care, and education. Cotton farming and textile mills drove much of the county’s nineteenth- and twentieth-century economy.

LaGrange College, founded in 1831, remains an important institution. Bellevue, historic neighborhoods, museums, theaters, and gardens represent the county’s architectural and cultural heritage.

West Point, Manufacturing, and the State Line

West Point stands on the Chattahoochee River at the Alabama boundary. The Battle of West Point took place near Fort Tyler on April 16, 1865, during the final weeks of the Civil War.

Modern West Point is home to Kia Georgia’s automobile plant, which anchors a wider automotive supply chain. Interface and other international manufacturers add textile, chemical, and advanced-manufacturing employment across the county.

West Point Lake and Outdoor Recreation

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed West Point Dam and Lake primarily for flood control. The reservoir now supports fishing, boating, camping, wildlife habitat, and lakeside tourism, with most of the lake located in Troup County.
