UNESCO Institute for Statistics indicator E.5T8.FOREIGN.ORG40515.GPIA reports the adjusted gender parity index (GPIA) for inbound mobile tertiary students whose origin is East Asia and the Pacific.
Among the 82 destination observations dated 2023, 7 fall within the 0.97–1.03 parity band. 45 are above 1.03 and therefore female-leaning, while 30 are below 0.97 and male-leaning. The Republic of Korea records 1.384, on the female-leaning side.

The mapped countries are destinations, not origins
The geographic direction is essential. East Asia and the Pacific is fixed as the origin region. Each map polygon represents a destination country or area where students from that origin region are enrolled in tertiary education.
Korea’s value therefore describes the gender balance among East Asia-Pacific-origin mobile tertiary students studying in Korea. It does not describe Korean students studying elsewhere in the region.
Internationally mobile students are not simply all foreign citizens
UIS defines internationally mobile students as individuals who physically cross an international border to participate in education in a destination country different from their country of origin.
For tertiary students, the preferred origin concept is the country where the student obtained upper-secondary qualifications. Usual or permanent residence can be used when that is unavailable, and citizenship is a last-resort proxy. This makes international mobility different from a simple foreign-citizenship count.
GPIA is centered on 1
The gender parity index compares female and male indicator values. The adjusted version used by UIS transforms the measure so that it is symmetric around 1 and bounded between 0 and 2.
A value of 1 indicates parity. Values below 1 are male-leaning and values above 1 are female-leaning. UIS uses 0.97–1.03 as a practical parity band.
Korea’s 1.384 does not mean 38.4% more women
Adjusted GPIA is not the raw female-to-male ratio once the unadjusted ratio exceeds 1. UIS inverts ratios above 1 and subtracts the result from 2 so that equal distances from 1 represent symmetric disparity.
Korea’s 1.384 therefore indicates a substantial female-leaning pattern, but it should not be translated into a claim that female students outnumber male students by exactly 38.4%. Exact sex differences require the underlying female and male counts.
Seven destinations fall within the 0.97–1.03 parity band
7 of the 82 observations fall within 0.97–1.03. Armenia, Botswana, Guatemala and North Macedonia are exactly 1.000, Estonia is 1.012, Qatar 0.984 and Slovakia 0.974.
These values indicate similar female and male indicator values, but they do not reveal the total number of East Asia-Pacific-origin students. A small and a large destination can have the same parity index.

Extreme parity values need actual student counts for context
Values such as 2.000 or 0.333 can look dramatic, but this dataset does not include the total number of East Asia-Pacific-origin students in each destination or the underlying female and male headcounts.
A few students can move a parity index sharply when the denominator is small. Extreme values are therefore best treated as signals for follow-up using headcounts and multiple years of data.
Regional medians still hide large within-region differences
Among mapped observations, the median GPIA is about 1.116 in Europe, 0.878 in Asia and 0.843 in Africa.
Within-region variation is large. Monaco, Malta and France are strongly female-leaning, while Latvia and Ukraine are male-leaning. In Asia, Korea and Malaysia lean female while India leans male. Regional averages are therefore not sufficient explanations.
This indicator does not show the most popular destinations
GPIA is a gender-balance measure. It does not identify which destination receives the largest number of students from East Asia and the Pacific, nor does it show the share of all international students coming from this origin region.
Those questions require student-count indicators and different denominators. A destination can have GPIA close to 1 with very few students or a large imbalance with many students.
This is distinct from the North America-origin parity series
A separate UIS indicator uses the same GPIA structure for students originating in North America. Changing the origin region can produce a different gender pattern in the same destination.
Korea, for example, can lean female for both origin regions without having identical index values. Study fields, scholarships, destination preferences and the composition of origin countries can differ by origin region.
Blank map areas do not mean zero
The source table contains 82 destination observations, of which 75 match separate polygons in the low-resolution world boundary layer used here. Small territories such as Bermuda can have valid statistics without a distinct visible polygon.
Countries without a 2023 observation remain unclassified. Missing GPIA values are never filled with zero because zero would imply an extreme male-leaning result rather than missing data.

Destination values come from the UNESCO UIS Data Browser for E.5T8.FOREIGN.ORG40515.GPIA, using the 2023 observations. The mobility concept follows the UIS internationally mobile students definition.
GPIA calculation and interpretation follow the UIS parity-index methodology. The source package’s internal provider tag named the World Bank, but the official indicator and dataset are UNESCO UIS, so the completed metadata corrects the provider to UNESCO UIS.
