Décadas después, otro fuerte terremoto cerca de Anchorage volvió a dañar infraestructura urbana y de transporte. Como Anchorage concentra muchas funciones de distribución, su recuperación afecta al movimiento de personas y suministros más allá del área urbana inmediata. El derrame del Exxon Valdez mostró otro tipo de riesgo de infraestructura. Prince William Sound y Valdez forman parte de un sistema de transporte energético y al mismo tiempo de un ambiente marino sensible ligado a pesca, fauna, comunidades costeras y turismo. El accidente convirtió prevención, respuesta, restauración y responsabilidad en temas centrales de la historia ambiental regional.
